2 Corinthians 11:1–10

This week, we shall conclude the study of Second Corinthians of the New Testament.

Paul launches his most passionate defense of his apostleship before the Corinthian believers, using language that is rather unexpected:

(1) Paul begins in v. 1 urging the Corinthian believers to put up with his "foolishness”. Within these first 10 verses, how does Paul reveal his “foolishness”?

(2) He has already said he will not compare with himself others in 10:12. Why then would he feel obliged to compare himself with these “super-apostles”?

(3) According to vv. 1-4, how serious are the heresies taught by these “super-apostles”?

(4) In what way, according to v. 4, did the Corinthian believers demonstrate that they might have been deceived as Eve was? In what way might the deception that they have fallen for be similar to Eve’s (in terms of the medium or method used by Satan)?

(5) Paul says his jealousy is one of “godly jealousy”. In what way(s) might godly jealousy differ from ungodly jealousy?

(6) It is obvious that at least some in the Corinthian congregation consider Paul as inferior to the “super-apostles”. What is one of the factors used by these critics of Paul according to v. 6? How does Paul defend himself?

(7) Interestingly, another factor used to discredit Paul appears to do with Paul not getting paid by the Corinthians, while the “super-apostles” appear to be paid handsomely by them:

a. How then can this be a sign of Paul’s inferiority?

b. What is Paul’s defense in this case?

(8) What is the main message to you today and how may you apply it to your life?

Meditative Reflection
Godly Jealousy

I am jealous of you with a godly jealousy...” (2 Co. 11:2)

Allow me to share with you the following insight of Paul Barnett which I find very helpful in understanding the kind of zeal we should have for the church of Christ:

“Paul declares from the outset, ‘I am jealous for you in a godly…jealousy.’ This sentiment should not be confused with the petty possessiveness that mars human relationships. His words—which could also be rendered, ‘I am zealous for you with God’s own zeal’—reflect an important theme in the LXX (i.e. the Greek version of the OT). Yahweh, Israel’s covenantal God, in zeal for His holy name, binds His people to Him in a relationship that excludes the worship of other gods (LXX Exod. 20:5; 34:14; Deut. 4:24; 6:15). The theme of ‘zeal’ also reflects God’s covenantal care for his people (LXX Isa. 9:6; 37:32; 63:15-16).The intertestamental traditions looked back on individuals like Phinehas and Elijah, who took violent action against idolatry and apostasy, as having acted in zeal for their God. Inspired by zeal for Yahweh, the pre-Christian Saul of Tarsus, as a persecutor of the church, stood in the same tradition (Gal. 1:13-14; Phil. 3:6; Acts 22:3-4). The Christian Paul’s zeal, however, is a converted zeal, free of the violence that characterized his pre-converted days and zealots before him, a zeal now driven by love…”

2 Corinthians 11:11–21

(1) In pressing the point that he purposely avoids taking money from the Corinthians, what two reasons does Paul give in vv. 11-12? What does the second reason really mean?

(2) Paul launches his fiercest attack of these “super-apostles in vv. 13-15:

a. What does he accuse them of?

b. According to Paul who are these “super-apostles”?

c. Is it too harsh an accusation? Why or why not?

(3) Since he acknowledges that his boasting is “in the way the world does” (v. 18). Why then would Paul go on to boast? Does he not really make a “fool” of himself? Why or why not?

(4) By putting up with these “super-apostles” so easily (v. 4), what in fact have the Corinthian believers allowed to have done to themselves according to v. 20?

(5) By putting up with these “super-apostles” so easily (v.4), and judging by the words that Paul has said so far, do you think the Corinthians have already been led astray or are only in danger of being led astray? Why?

(6) What then does Paul want to achieve by his boasting?

(7) What is the main message to you today and how may you apply it to your life?

Meditative Reflection
Dealingwith False Apostles and False Prophets

For such people are false apostles, deceitful workers, masquerading as apostles of Christ.” (2 Co. 11:13)

Some commentators opine that the “super apostles” attacked by Paul, perhaps, are some of the respected apostles in Jerusalem, but it is clear from the above that they are not apostles at all, because they preach a “different Jesus”, a “different Spirit” and thus, a “different gospel” (11:4). Now Paul calls them not only “false apostles, deceitful workers”, but in fact, “servants” of Satan (11:15). No wonder, Paul would not give them any opportunity to influence and enslave the Corinthians. Paul has obviously had disagreements with Peter and James (Gal. 2:9-14), and he chose to confront them, but they remain on good terms and as brothers in the Lord (2 Pet. 3:15). However, Paul would not have any part of fellowship with these false apostles.

Such an attitude towards heretics has been the mark of the true church, and yes, there were times in the history of the church that in the name of orthodoxy, the church resorted to use violence, but it is not the example of Paul. As we considered in yesterday’s article, “The Christian Paul’s zeal, however, is a converted zeal free of the violence characterized his pre-converted days and zealots before him, a zeal now driven by love…”.  But Paul does remain vigilant in his apologetics for the pure gospel and his disassociation with the heretics.

Unfortunately, in the name of love, many Evangelicals have lost Paul’s zeal for the preservation of the truth of the gospel, and nothing is more troubling than the so-called dialogue with the Mormons. With the denial of the deity of Jesus, the notion of salvation by work and the doctrine that Father God was once a man and many other heresies, they do preach a different Jesus, a different Spirit and a different gospel. If we are so loving as to treat them as “brothers” in Christ, are we really following Paul’s example? Not to resort to violence against heretics is right, but still, “what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? What harmony is there between Christ and Belial? What does a believer have in common with an unbeliever? What agreement is there between the temple of God and idols?” (2 Co. 6:14-16). These are Paul’s words, not mine.

「那等人是假使徒,行事詭詐,裝作基督使徒的模樣。 (11:13)

有部份的解經家以為保羅在此所攻擊的是盤踞耶路撒冷受人敬重的使徒。但從上列的經文中,我們知道他們絕對不是使徒,是假使徒(11:13) ;而且,他們是傳另一個耶穌、另一個靈、另一個福音的(11:4) 。保羅更稱他們為撒但的使者(11:15) 。無怪,保羅絕對不給予他們任何機會去誘惑和奴役哥林多的信徒。保羅當然與耶路撒冷的領袖們有意見上的爭議,就像在加拉太書2:9-14中,他連彼得也當面的指摘;但是卻絕對沒有影響他們在主裡的情誼。彼得在彼得後書3:15更稱保羅為「我們所親愛的兄弟」。但對著假使徒,保羅是與他們劃清界線的。

保羅這種心態是歷代教會繼續承接的,雖然有時卻走回舊約的熱心,以暴力對付離經背道者。這當然是不對,就像昨天我們思想過的:「但作為基督徒的保羅卻有更新的熱心,他把悔改前舊有的熱心除去了,現以愛取而代之……」。保羅繼續以「口誅筆伐」來維護福音真理,也與傳異端者絕無相干。

可惜,今天一些福音派的領袖,已失去保羅衛道的心志,竟與摩門教的領袖對話。摩門教明顯的不承認耶穌的神性、是靠行為得救、認為父神曾成為人,並且傳種種與福音真理相違的教義。說他們是傳另一個耶穌、另一個靈、另一個福音,是絕對沒有誇張的。如果我們以他們為「弟兄」,我們是真的學效保羅嗎?不以暴力相向是對的,但面對異端我們不能不說:「義和不義有甚麼相交呢?光明和黑暗有甚麼相通呢?基督和彼列有甚麼相和呢?信主的和不信主的有甚麼相干呢?(林前6:14-16) 這些當然不是我說的話,乃是保羅說的。

2 Corinthians 11:22–33

(1) In comparing himself with the “super-apostles”, what is Paul comparing in v. 22? What does this tell us about who the “super-apostles” might be?

(2) But in vv. 23–29, Paul is listing his credentials with which those of hardly anyone else, let alone the “super-apostles”, can compare. Try to divide these credentials into logical subdivisions.

(3) The following are my suggested subdivisions, based on the emphasis used by Paul in each (more easily identifiable in the original Greek):

a. The “more” section: he worked (more) harder, was jailed more frequently and flogged more severely;

b. The “many times” section: he was exposed to death many times, lashed five times, beaten by rods three times, stoned once, shipwrecked three times, in open sea for a night and day, on the move many times;

c. The “danger” section: he was (in) rivers, (in the hands of) bandits, fellow Jews, Gentiles, (in) the city, (in) the country, at sea and among false brothers;

d. The “in conditions” section: he was in labor and hardship, in sleeplessness, in hunger and thirst, in fasting (i.e. without food) and in cold and nakedness;

e. The “besides” section: on him the daily pressure, concern for all churches.

(4) Why would Paul boast of the above?

(5) What do you think are the differences between Paul’s boasting and that of the “super-apostles”?

(6) Why does Paul call these boastings “of the things that show my weakness” (v. 30)?

(7) Are you aware of what you tend to boast of yourself (even unknowingly)?

(8) Note the last subdivision, i.e. that of “besides” in v. 28: The following verse (29) is likely Paul’s explanation of why he feels pressure daily in his concern for all the church. How does this speak to his credentials as “an apostle of Jesus Christ” (1:1)? What example does he set for you and me?

(9) Why does Paul, having ended his list of sufferings, add one more example in vv. 32-33?

(10) What is the main message to you today and how may you apply it to your life?

Meditative Reflection
The Burden of the Ministry of Love

Who is weak, and I do not feel weak? Who is led into sin, and I do not inwardly burn.” (2 Co. 11:29)

As Paul appears to be boasting, like the “super-apostles” in “the way the world does” (11:18), his focus is really far from that of the world’s. Yes, in this chapter, he does assert that, like them, he too is a Hebrew, an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham and a servant of Christ (11:22-23), but such a comparison based on the flesh (which is the original word for “the world” in 11:18) stops here. The rest is a list of his sufferings for Christ. In other words, he is lifting up his garment and shows the world the scars of his suffering for Christ. But he is not really taking pride in these sufferings; how can he, since he understands what he has suffered is to “fill up” in his flesh what is still lacking in regard to (his portion) of Christ’s afflictions (Col. 1:24). In fact, he says he is boasting of the things that show his weakness (11:30). Paul is really no “super-apostle”, and in suffering, just like anyone else, he knows he can only persevere through Christ. He is too weak to persevere by himself. As a result, the list of sufferings is no more than a list of his times in weakness (which he affirms again in 12:10).

But the list ends with what truly distinguishes him from all these so-called apostles who seek to enslave the Corinthians, to gain profit and to take pride in themselves, and that is his heart for the people he serves—even the faithless Corinthians: “Who is weak, and I do not feel weak? Who is led into sin, and I do not inwardly burn?” (11:29).

As much as Paul’s admonitions to the Corinthians are full of harsh words of rebuke and even condemnation, each word of admonition is preceded by the feeling of their weakness accompanied with inward grief for their sin. This is “incarnational” ministry — the ministry with the burden of love.

有誰輭弱,我不輭弱呢;有誰跌倒,我不焦急呢? (11:29)

保羅好像是倣效那些假使徒一樣,「憑著血氣誇口」(11:18) 。但明顯的,他的所謂誇口,絕非屬血氣的。對,在這章中,他確曾以自己也是希伯來人、是以色列人、是亞伯拉罕的後裔和是基督的僕人與他們相比(11:22-23) 。但這「屬血氣」的比較就止於此。跟著他作為主受苦的見證,好像是在把衣裳揭起,向眾人顯示身上眾多的傷痕。這些是否他用來誇口的呢?當然不是:因為他深知這一切的苦難,只不過是補滿(他在) 基督患難上的缺欠(西1:24) 。他更說,他其實是在誇那關乎他輭弱的事(11:30)

保羅當然不是超級使徒,他像我們一樣,在受苦時,只能靠基督才能忍受得住。在列出他受苦的經歷時,正如他在12:10所言,他是列出他輭弱的時刻而已!

這些苦難見證的結果,卻清楚的刻劃出保羅與這些假使徒的分別來。後者是以利字當頭,以血氣之事來奪哥林多人的心;保羅是以真情、愛心來服侍眾人包括這些對他失信的哥林多信徒:「有誰輭弱,我不輭弱呢;有誰跌倒,我不焦急呢?(11:29)

雖然保羅在書信中,屢用嚴詞苛責,但原來在每一句責備說話的背後,他如同身受,體貼他們的輭弱,更是為他們充滿了焦慮的。這正是「道成肉身」般的事奉,是因愛的事奉所帶來的負擔!

2 Corinthians 12:1–10

Having shared his immense sufferings for the Lord which should have shamed those who challenged his apostleship in Christ, why does he feel necessary to also share something, perhaps, that he has never shared with anyone until now—his “surpassing great revelations”? (v. 7).

(1) What impact might it have on the Corinthians who appear to take pride in special knowledge and spiritual gifts?

(2) In talking about this experience in the 3rd person, Paul would date this occurrence to prove that it is real:

a. Where was he caught up to (v. 2 and v. 4)?

b. Why does he not know if it was in the body or out of the body? What does this tell you about supernatural visions and revelations?

c. What did he hear?

d. What do you think was the purpose of such a supernatural experience?

(3) Now that he has shared this experience, albeit reluctantly and in the 3rd person, do you think he has made others “think more of (him) than is warranted”? (v. 6)

(4) In order to keep Paul from becoming conceited, what did God do to Paul and why?

(5) Paul has chosen not to tell us what that thorn in his flesh is, but he does mention a few things about it:

a. If you had a thorn in your flesh, how would you feel?

b. If God allowed the thorn to remain, how would you feel?

c. Paul follows with calling this thorn a messenger of Satan—if understood literally, how is this messenger acting as a thorn in Paul’s flesh?

d. Naturally Paul pleaded with God to take it away. Why does he appear to stop after three times? What was God’s answer?

e. What did God’s answer mean to Paul so that he would accept his condition?

f. Does God’s answer apply to you and your condition? Why?

(6) Can you say the same with Paul that, “This is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties”? Why or why not?

(7) Has today’s reflection helped you understand what Paul says in v. 5, “I will not boast about myself, except about my weaknesses”?

(8) What weaknesses can you boast about today?

(9) What is the main message to you today and how may you apply it to your life?

Meditative Reflection
Paul’s Surpassingly Great Revelations

But I refrain, so no one will think more of me than is warranted by what I do or say or because of these surpassingly great Revelations.” (2 Co. 12:6-7)

As much as we understand that it was the Corinthians who really drove Paul to boast of his “surpassingly great revelations”, we still wonder if Paul was right in so doing. Allow me to share the insight of John Chrysostom, Archbishop of Constantinople of the 4th century in this respect:

“Great indeed was this revelation. But this was not the only one: there were many others besides, but he mentions one out of many. For that there were many, hear what he says: ‘Lest I should be exalted overmuch through the exceeding greatness of the revelations’.

"And yet, a man may say, ‘if he wished to conceal them, he ought not to have given any intimation whatever or said anything of the sort; but if he wished to speak of them, to speak plainly.’ Wherefore then is it that he neither spoke plainly nor kept silence? To show by this also that he resorts to the thing unwillingly. And therefore also he has stated the time, 'fourteen years'. For he does not mention it without an object, but to show that he who had refrained for so long a time would not now have spoken out, except the necessity for doing so had been great. But he would have still kept silence, had he not seen the brethren perishing.

"Now if Paul from the very beginning was such an one as to be counted worthy of such a revelation, when as yet he had not wrought such good works; consider what he must have grown to in fourteen years.

"And observe how even in this very matter he shows modesty, by his saying some things, but confessing that of others he is ignorant. For that he was caught up indeed, he declared, but whether 'in the body' or 'out of the body' he says he does not know. And yet it would have been quite enough, if he had told of his being caught up and had been silent [about the other]; but as it is, in his, his modesty he adds this also. What then? Was it the mind that was caught up and the soul, whilst the body remained dead? Or was the body caught up? It is impossible to tell. For if Paul who was caught up and whom things unspeakable, so many and so great, had befallen was in ignorance, much more we. For, indeed, that he was in Paradise he knew, and that he was in the third heaven he was not ignorant, but the manner he knew not clearly.

"And see from yet another consideration how free he is from pride. For in his narrative about ‘the city of the Damascenes’ (2 Co. 11:32) he confirms what he says, but here not; for it was not his aim to establish this fact strongly, but to mention and intimate it only. Wherefore also he goes on to say, 'Of such an one will I glory'; not meaning that he who was caught up was some other person, but he so frames his language in the best manner he possibly could, so as at once to mention the fact, and to avoid speaking of himself openly. For what sequence would there be in bringing someone else forward, when discoursing about himself? Wherefore then did he so put it? It was not all one to say, ‘I was caught up', and, ‘I knew one that was caught up'; and ‘I will glory of myself', and, ‘I will glory of such an one'. Now if any should say, ‘And how is it possible to be caught up without a body?’, I will ask him, ‘How is it possible to be caught up with a body?’, for this is even more inexplicable than the other, if you examine by reasonings and do not give place to faith.”

只是我禁止不說,恐怕有人把我看高了,過於他在我身上所看見所聽見的。又恐怕我因所得的啟示甚大,就過於自高…… (12:6-7)

我們知道因哥林多信徒之故,保羅逼不得已,才把這極大的啟示說出來。我們或許不禁仍在想,保羅是否應道出這些經歷呢?容許我和大家分享第四世紀的先賢John Chysostom對此事的見解:

「這啟示誠然甚大。但這卻非保羅惟一的經歷,還有許多的;他只擇其一來分享。就像他說:『又恐怕我因所得的啟示(原文是眾數,譯者按)甚大,就過於自高』。

但或許有人會說:『如果他是想隱藏,便不應提及這些經歷;若是要說出來,為何不直言。』現在,他沒有隱藏,卻說得不清不楚,何解?這是要顯出他實在是在無選擇之下才講出來的。故此,他指出是14年前的事了。他這樣指出,是告訴我們,若不是現在極重要的原故,他不會把這14年來從不提的事說出來;若不是見到弟兄沉淪的危險,他仍會是閉口不言的。

如果在他開始事奉,尚未作出如此美好的工作時,就配受這樣的啟示,試想他在這14年中有何等的成長!

但在這事上我們更看見他所顯的謙卑。他一面照實講論,也同時承認無知。他說確是被提,但卻不知是身內或身外。其實,他只用說被提,而不用說其他的。但他的謙卑使他直說。究竟是怎樣的呢?是靈、是魂的被提呢?身體是死的嗎?或是連身體也被提呢?無人知道。如果連被提,聽到隱祕言語、經歷這極大啟示的保羅也不知曉,何況我們呢?但他卻知自己是在第三層天、是在樂園裡,但如何被提的,他就不清楚了。

再者,從另一事上,我們也看見他是沒有自傲的。在提到大馬色城時(11:32) ,他刻意的為所說的提供證據。在這裡卻不是這樣:因為他不顧慮求證,乃以隱喻就夠了。所以他更說:『為這人我要誇口』。這並不是說被提的是別人,乃是力求一方面說出事實,同時能隱藏自己……

(1) Paul is obvious very unhappy that he has to boast as he just did, but he puts the blame squarely on the Corinthians. Do you think Paul is justified in blaming them? Why or why not?

(2) What does Paul say the signs of a true apostle are? Why then does he still say that he is nothing?

(3) Can you see what one of the complaints against Paul by the Corinthians is according to v. 13?

(4) Why is Paul so determined not to receive any financial support from the Corinthian believers according to v. 14?

(5) Also from the reading of vv. 16-18, what accusations have been made by some of the Corinthian believers? If you were Paul, would you receive financial support from them? Would you still visit them? Why or why not?

In Christ’s Steps

“(B)ecause what I want is not your possessions but you...” (2 Co. 12:14)

The more I read this “Second” epistle by Paul to the Corinthians, the more I can see the image of Christ in Paul:

(1) First, Paul is certainly following Christ’s steps of suffering (1 Pet. 2:21). As we have considered earlier, he repeatedly mentions his suffering not so much to boast, but to show his desire to identify with Christ in his suffering.

(2) As Christ has laid down His life for the sheep, Paul, too, is willing to lay down his life for the Corinthians and would do anything for their true benefits. And he does so like Jesus, out of nothing but love.

(3) And like Christ, Paul has experienced rejection by the very people he loves, but it does not diminish his love for them a bit. In an effort to win back their love, I could almost hear the same fatherly cry that God utters in Isaiah 1:2 “Hear, O heaven! Listen, O earth! For the Lord has spoken, ‘I reared children and brought them up, but they have rebelled against me”. No, Paul does not invoke heaven and earth to be his witnesses (which he could have), but just the same, he invokes his fatherly heart in his desire to win back his spiritual children, the Corinthian believers.

(4) As we have considered a little earlier, he has followed Christ’s example of incarnational ministry, as he identifies with the weakness of the people even before rebuking them (11:29).

(3) 也像基督一樣,保羅經歷被他愛的人所拒絕、所攻擊;但這卻沒有減卻他不離不棄的愛。他用盡方法去挽回他們的愛,我彷佛聽到保羅用神在以賽亞書1:2呼天搶地的呼喚:「天哪要聽、地阿側耳而聽……我養育兒女,將他們養大,他們竟悖逆我。」對,保羅並沒有呼天搶地,但他為父之心,卻完全向哥林多信徒他屬靈的兒女赤露敞開的。

2 Corinthians 12:19–13:4

(1) Sensing that the Corinthian believers may not take his words well and accuse him of being defensive, Paul bares his soul and emphasizes again his motive and attitude of his defense in v. 19. What should these emphases mean to the Corinthians?

(2) Paul also spells out his fear in three different aspects:

a. If I call his 1st fear one of confrontation (v. 20a), would you agree? Why?

b. What is his 2nd fear (v. 20b)? What kind of a church is the church of Corinth, in your opinion?

c. If I call his 3rd fear a fear of grief, (v. 21), would you agree? Why?

(3) Now, Paul points out what he is about to do in his 3rd visit and it is partly to address their demand for proof that Christ is speaking through him:

a. What then is the essence of this challenge?

b. What proof can they produce to sustain their challenge?

c. What proof does Paul need to counter their challenge?

d. What does his quote in v. 1 from Deuteronomy 19:15 to do with this challenge?

(4) What warning does Paul give to them in v.4? What does he mean?

Meditative Reflection
What a Church, What an Apostle!

Have you been thinking all along that we have been defending ourselves to you?” (2 Co. 12:19)

As we finally come to the last part of 2 Corinthians, I think we must have either been confused or touched by Paul’s defense of his apostleship, or both. He has been driven by these ungrateful and rebellious Corinthian believers to defend himself as a “fool”, having to recount all his sufferings, having to remind them of his tireless labor for them and for the Lord, having to use the miracles that he performed as proof also for his authority to speak for Christ as a true apostle. And I truly believe that Paul was more than reluctant to do so, if not for the sake of the gospel and for the sake of building up these Corinthian believers. As I reflect on how Paul bares his soul before the Corinthians, I have come to be grateful for this letter that Paul has penned, for these reasons:

(1) The saying,“wherever there are people, there are troubles” is not just a cliché, but the truth. The end of chapter 12 and the beginning of chapter 13 mark Paul’s final warnings against them, and these warnings clearly show what kind of a church they have in Corinth—a church that is plagued by “discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, slander, gossip, arrogance and disorder” (12:20). As a pastor I find myself asking this rhetorical question: “Who wants to pastor such a church?” What a church!

(2) That also prompts me to ask, “Why would Paul still want to visit such a church again—a church that puts him down as less than eloquent, laughs at him because of his less than attractive appearance, questions his authority, and even spurns his love for them?” But repeatedly, Paul shows his father’s heart—a heart after that of Jesus. He is committed to them, to building them up, to win their love and to loving them no matter what. What an apostle!

「你們到如今還想我們是向你們分訴……(12:19)

我們終於來到這書信的末了,我不曉得你對保羅的自辯有什麼感受:是大惑不解?是深受感動?是這些沒有本心、悖逆的哥林多信徒逼使保羅要為自己分訴的,就像一個「愚妄人」一樣。保羅不但把自己的辛勞和種種的苦難重述,更要提醒他們,自己有行神蹟、奇事、異能,作為他使徒身份的明證。我十分相信,若不是為著福音的原故和他們的好處,保羅實在是極不願意說出這些話的。就是因著保羅這些肺腑之言,我們得著教會生活和事奉上的提醒:

(1) 知道「有人就有難處」,這話不虛:在書信的結束(特別是在第12章的末段和13章的開始,我們再一次看到哥林多是怎樣的一個教會有紛爭、嫉妒、惱怒、結黨、毀謗、讒言、狂傲、混亂的事(12:20) 。讀到這些,作為一個牧者,我不禁的問:誰願意到這樣的一個教會牧養呢?

(2) 但同時,我亦不禁的問:是什麼驅使保羅仍硬要到他們那裡去呢?那不正是一個小看他沒有口才、侮辱他外貌醜陋、言語粗俗的教會嗎?他們雖是他在福音裡所生的,豈不同時是蔑視他的愛,挑戰他使徒位份的一群嗎?但保羅重複地向他們敞開父親的心懷,堅定不移的,沒有放棄他們,仍盡各種的方法,要贏取他們的愛、仍要在基督裡建立他們。他確是何等的使徒!

Meditative Reflection
Do You Have Christ in You?

Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith, test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you—unless of course, you fail the test.” (2 Co. 13:5)

When Paul ends this letter that he addresses to “the church of God in Corinth together with all the saints throughout Achaia” (2 Co. 1:1) with asking them to examine themselves to see if they are really in faith, I find this very shocking, as much as it could be a rhetorical question.

But given what Jesus says in Matthew 7:21-23, this is not necessarily a mere rhetorical question, but one that says we all need self-examination, because He says,

Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’. Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’”

Of course, our confidence in having Christ living in us is based on the very Word of God in that by repentance and faith in Jesus Christ, we know that Christ lives in us (Jn. 1:12, Rev. 3:20, Acts 2:38). The Reformers also point to the “inner witness” of the Holy Spirit who convicts us and guides us into His truth as an important sign of Christ’s presence in our lives. And we, who have Christ in us, can also point to the joy and the many spiritual experiences and encounters in Christ as proof of such a fact. But these are still very personal (not that they are not true), and if we do have Christ in us, there will definitely be the witness of the faith community in which we live. That means our inward transformation must necessarily be visible to our community through our outward actions, and that is our consistent obedience to the Father’s will that Jesus refers to, or as Paul points out here, you will not do anything wrong. By that Paul means their continuous repentance (12:21), their leaving their former way of life (12:20) and their rejection of the “super-apostles” and their teachings.

Our “western” Christianity has become so individualistic that we forget that throughout the scriptures, the “amen” of the community of believers is so important, not only when it concerns our calling or vocation, but also when it comes to whether we are genuine believers in Christ or “counterfeits” (as some would translate “failing the test” in 13:5).

你有基督在心裡嗎?

你們總要自己省察有信心沒有,也要自己試驗,豈不知你們若不是可棄絕的,就有耶穌基督在你們心裡麼。(13:5

在結束這封寫給「在哥林多神的教會,並亞該亞遍處的眾聖徒」(1:1)的書信時,保羅竟然要提醒他們去省察自己,是否確有信心。這句話是叫人有點兒吃驚的。但想到主耶穌在馬太福音7:21-23所言,這個提醒是合宜的。我們確須自省,因為「凡稱呼我主阿,主阿的人不能都進天國;惟獨遵行我天父旨意的人才能進去。當那日必有許多人對我說:主阿,主阿,我們不是奉你的名傳道,奉你的名趕鬼,奉你的名行許多異能麼?我就明明的告訴他們說:我從來不認識你們,你們這些作惡的人,離開我去罷!

我們怎知基督耶穌是住在我們心裡的呢?當然,我們的信心是在乎神的話語:我們是藉著悔改、認罪,相信耶穌基督而得救恩的,有基督耶穌的內住(如約1:12,啟3:20和徒2:38等所應許的) 。加爾文這宗教改革領袖更指出「聖靈的內證」使我們知道基督的內住。按著信主後的經歷,我們都嘗到基督裡出人意外的平安、喜樂等等確實的證據。若然我們有這些個人確實的經歷,也必有教會的弟兄姊妹看見我們生命的改變而作的見證。意思是說,內在生命的改變必然帶來外在生命,別人看得到的改變;這就是活出我們常常順服父神的旨意的生命。這就是主耶穌上述所指出的,也是保羅在此所說:行事端正、不作惡事(13:7) ,有悔改生命(12:21),離開舊日的生命(12:20) 、拒絕假使徒的教訓這些生命的彰顯為證。

今天的基督徒實在太西化了,總是落入個人的主義中,忽略了聖經群體見證的教導。其實,不論是一個人的蒙召,或是試驗一個人是否真的悔改信主,教會的弟兄姊妹的「阿們」是極其有力的證據。
